Unusual Crimson Lightning Photographed in the Atmosphere
Three image specialists in New Zealand have successfully captured images of “red sprites”, one of the least common atmospheric displays globally, during which bright red bursts become visible in the atmosphere.
An Unforgettable Night of Discovery
The photographers initially planned to photograph the night sky over the unique geological structures in the lower part of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the extraordinary event.
Initially believing they would be blessed to get clear skies that night, but their shooting session transformed into “a truly memorable experience,” a team member commented.
Upon examining his images for a Milky Way panorama and discovered he had recorded crimson electrical bursts,” he noted. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are bursts of electrical energy in the higher atmospheric layers, caused by thunderstorms. Differing from lightning that aims at the surface, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, creating appearances that resemble vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a such an event was captured – by chance – in 1989, by a research unit at the a academic organization.
Brief and Dreamlike Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the human sight, but a team member got lucky. “By chance, I was gazing right at one when it took place – just a perfect coincidence viewing the correct area of the heavens and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he commented.
Seeing the events was a aspiration for this individual, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you’re seeing an unreal vision, it’s very ethereal … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to observe.”
Skill-Based and Creative Mastery
Photographing a red sprite requires a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and creative flare, he explained. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
Another photographer commented it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I could see the galactic band glowing above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination swayed above a electrical event far on the horizon,” he explained.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
Based on his understanding, there are no other images capturing crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.
“It was one of those moments when you know you are seeing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
