United Nations Removes Sanctions on President of Syria Ahead of Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting next week.

He was appointed provisional head of state following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that ousted the former president in December 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.

Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups this past July.

More Penalties Removed

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and to friendly nations for their support of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a real shot to unify the country".

The pair met on their first occasion this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the Middle East.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country before he cut connections back in 2016.

Previous US Visit

The upcoming meeting will not be the president's debut journey to America in the current year. During September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to address the UN General Assembly in New York for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity toward Gaza's residents.
