Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Wembley Crowd Support Following Emphatic Wales Victory.
The England head coach voiced his disappointment that the England team did not receive stronger encouragement from the Wembley fans during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his side maintain their good form, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the first 20 minutes deciding the game. However, he was displeased with the energy at the national stadium.
“With one and a half training days to get ready against a organized team and we excelled,” the coach remarked. “We could have been 5-0 up at the break. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get support back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s disappointing because the squad deserved better encouragement today.”
“I stand by this statement. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater backing in phases where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive support for Wales. It could have helped us to recharge, but it is what it is and that is it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Display
Away from risking a dispute among supporters, Tuchel also caused a stir by excluding Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. However the move was backed up by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and getting his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” the head coach explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his place.”
Bellamy Seeks Improvement from Defeat
The Wales manager hopes that his team, who host Belgium in a important World Cup qualifier on Monday, learn from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” the manager said. “I wanted to assess where we are. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance gives me motivation.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after hitting a goalpost and is a concern when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a qualifier on Tuesday.
