Additionally, Trump remarked he would contemplate similar action against LA for the 2028 Olympics due to possible security concerns.

Legal Authority and Informal Leverage

Even though Trump lacks direct legal authority to unilaterally remove either tournament, he may apply pressure the organizing committees managing each tournament to shift host cities.

Background of Comments

These statements were made during a press event with Javier Milei, who was visiting the executive mansion following the announcement of a multibillion-dollar bailout for the Argentine country. Toward the conclusion of the meeting, a journalist questioned Trump about a latest unauthorized gathering in the city where authorities were attacked and a patrol car was set on fire. The journalist also asked if the situation could result in the loss of organizing rights for the 48-team soccer tournament.

“It's possible to take them away,” Trump remarked regarding the FIFA World Cup fixtures, set to be held at the Foxborough venue. “She is poor … they're far-left, and they are dominating areas of the city. It's a pretty big assertion, right?”

Street Takeovers and Public Safety Concerns

Public disruptions, a digitally organized occurrence where participants assemble on city streets after dark to perform stunts, have emerged as a frequent issue in metropolitan centers since the Covid-19 pandemic closures. Current such gatherings have become aggressive in the state, including Boston. However, these gatherings are usually not regarded as linked to any particular political ideology.

“When someone is failing, and I feel there are unsafe conditions, I'd call the organization's president, who is excellent, and tell him let’s move it to an alternate venue,” he said publicly. “And he would do that. He may not enjoy doing it, but he would comply. Readily, he’d do it.”

Organizational Alignment

Gianni Infantino has been open his efforts to be closely connected with the former president before the 2026 event, planned to be hosted in numerous American venues across the United States along with several in Canada and a few in Mexico. The organization's leader has appeared at several Oval Office gatherings, facilitated Trump hand over the Club World Cup award after that tournament’s final, and has even postponed his the group's assembly to travel with Trump on a trip to the Middle East this year.

Past Statements

Despite this, Trump from warning about the relocation of soccer games from other US host cities. In late September, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis were comparable statements, with Trump asserting both urban centers were “governed by radical left lunatics who lack understanding what they’re doing,” while criticizing the safety level of both areas and suggesting that events could be shifted.

FIFA Response

The organization's deputy Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s assertions when he responded afterward at a event in the UK capital.

“It’s the organization's event, under our authority, we decide such choices,” Montagliani said. “Respectfully to national heads, soccer is transcends political figures and football will endure their tenure and their policies. It's the beauty of this sport, that it is bigger than any individual and beyond individual states.”

Similarly, Trump’s answer to a question about the Massachusetts city included a comparable warning regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“When I believed LA was not going to be sufficiently organized, I would shift it to an alternate venue if necessary,” Trump stated. “For the Olympics I may have to get a varying approval, but we will proceed.”

The permission Trump alluded to would need to come from the IOC. The president, the newly elected president, was chosen to her position in March and has so far not hold a public appearance with Trump, but she stated that she would like a meeting with him at some point.

Further Comments
